About Us

A Tanzanian NGO dedicated to the health and well being of Kigoma’s aging population.

Our Story

We began in 2000 under the operating name of SAWATA and worked with 23 elderly people to fight for their rights within the community. By 2018, we had decided to register as a non-governmental organization (NGO) and renamed our efforts to EWAKI [No. 06NGO / 00010 000]. This allowed us to operate under official registration, and we began to expand our work area to the Kigoma region.

The goal of EWAKI is simple on paper, but can be challenging to enact. We seek to build a community that shows a healthy and responsible dedication to sustaining the lives of our elderly population. Essentially we wish to ensure the elderly receive quality healthcare, human connection, and value. We do this by supporting them with essential services, and in return, we only ask that they share their wealth of knowledge with the younger generations.

There are two critical aspects our NGO hopes to educate society about. The first is that those over 60 years of age have just as much right and value as the rest of us. The second is we risk repeating many of history’s mistakes if we do not learn from those that have lived through them and persevered.

Combining these goals together, we find ourselves at the critical crossroads of supporting and improving the quality of life of our elderly clients.

If you would like to support our many initiatives or just spend some time with this vibrant and valuable community, please feel free to reach out. We are always happy to accept funding and volunteer contributions.
